Message of the Tartan Army

“We in The Tartan Army are so appreciative to the French people who are doing this for Piper Bill. As you know we have published this on our message board/website and hopefully we can make a small contribution to what is a great cause.

We have many pipers who follow Scotland at football and hopefully when the statue is completed and unveiled, some of us will make it over to France to meet you all.

Vive Le France, Vive L’ Ecosse!!!!!”

Message of Chris Bentley

“This statue is an absolute must. As a British citizen I’m very grateful for the efforts of the French authorities and those French citizens who have done such a lot to get it off the ground. I will of course donate and get friends and family to do likewise. You will get there.”

Message of Terri Norman

“I have been collecting stories from those who served in WWI & WWII, and I wrote to Piper Bill Millin early last year and explained to him that my Father in Law Charles Phillips was one of the Commando’s just in front of him in that famous picture of them disembarking onto Sword beach. I was over the moon when he sent me a signed postcard wishing me good luck. If I was rich I would pay for the statue myself.
What he said was right “if they remember the piper they will remember the men”.
GOD BLESS YOU PIPER BILL MILLIN.”

HAIL A HERO TRUE .   Written by Pat Donaghue, Manager of Edinburgh Bagpipe Company

In fields with the midges,
Or on beaches or bridges,
Lord Lovatt would say,
“up here Millin, and play”.

So while shrapnel and shell,
And men screamed and fell.
From Arnhem to Dunkirk,
Young Bill didn’t shirk.

The Huns thought him mad,
For here was… , a lad,
Who marched and he played,
As the dogs of war beyed.

Midst shot and shell,
In a version of Hell,
Bill Millin the piper,
Cocked a snoot at the sniper,
And played as death danced

THE LEGEND OF PIPER BILL – written by Tony Church of St Andrews Pipe-band, Hamble le Rice

The sighing surf on sand abounds, and seabirds call, the only sounds
At break of summers day, and yet, within the hour men will have met
Their destiny as war’s shrill chatter ends this tranquil scene. The clatter
Of machine guns spit their hate, as landing craft nose in to grate
Against the shingle to disgorge their human load who wait to charge
Into oncoming deathly hail, but never faltering, nerves taut, pale
Faced, leaping down into the cold wet breakers, seeking firm foothold.

Struggling forward, arms raised clear to gain refuge ahead, so near
And yet seeming so far away as spiteful guns traverse and spray
The killing ground that lies ahead, already littered with the dead
And dying who would never see this bitter, bl**dy victory.
Then faintly, through the deafening din, an alien sound is heard, the thin
Melodious wailing cry of highland pipes, though bullets fly
Around him, he is unscathed still. Thus starts the tale of Piper Bill.

Bill, who piped for Brigadier Lord Lovat, raised a special cheer
When, leaving on the previous day, took up his pipes, began to play
“Road to the Isles”, as, leaving Hamble river for this costly gamble,
Lifting spirits of the men, calling, cheered and cheered again,
Who as the Solent slipped away, all knew that on the following day
They’d face their own worst fears and doubts, prayed that when it came about
They would stand firm and conquer fear to face the perils that appeared.

And now, amid the smoke and roar of high explosives, Bill endures
The hail of death, which all around leaves him untouched, while yet the sound
Of “Highland Laddie” fills the air as fingers on the chanter dare
To still defy the lethal storm, this awesome hell in all its forms.
Yet death and wholesale demolition, backdrop to this exhibition
Of the art of Scottish piping, even with the bullets sniping,
Will not quiet this hardy Scot, surviving mortar shell and shot.

He marches at the waters edge, still playing, able still to dredge
From deep within his mortal soul the courage to maintain and hold
Himself upright despite the urge to run for safety, then emerge
When all is still and quiet again, escape the trauma and the pain.
But Bill is made of sterner stuff, clutching his pipes he starts to puff
And fill the bag, then with a squeeze, his hands again with practiced ease
Launch into yet another air, lifting spirits everywhere.

And so the legend now is born, as Bill continues to perform
Beyond this strip of golden sand known as Sword Beach, where many men
Have fallen, sacrificed their all in answering their country’s call,
But in this page of history this part of France will always be
Where Highland Bagpipes played their part with inspiration, and gave heart
To all who witnessed Bill that day, who, when he crossed that beach to play,
With all his great panache and poise, gave the Highland Pipes their voice.

A POEM BY REG SMITH – No. 3 COMMANDO

A Wife Remembers

A word in the House, a stroke of a Pen
the country disbanded a body of Men
with fighting finesse and fitness supreme
the créme de la créme wore the berets of Green.

Their training was tough, it had to be so
how to fight with a knife, how to kill with a blow
Solerno, Bardia, Dieppe, St. Nazaire, when impossible
odds, the Commandos were there.

Their raids so successful that Hitler said
“If captured, no prisoners – I want these men dead!
Too late he discovered his men were not keen
to Battle with those wearing berets of Green.

On D-Day Sword Beach they were to the fore
as they jumped from their boats and made for the Shore
their contempt for the Nazis was plain to be seen
for they wore not steel helmets but the berets of Green.

When it was over, the fighting no more
the first they disbanded the Green beret ‘Corp’
who went back to their shire, their town, their Glen
a body of gentle self disciplined men.

Yet all these years on they still meet, it is said
to talk – toast their Queen, and remember their Dead
who’s memorial stands at the foot of the Ben
where they trained for the right to be Green beret men.

For our Freedom of movement our freedom speech
to those who came after the gospel I preach
A word in the House, a stroke of the pen cannot
wipe out our debt to those Green beret me

  1. We will be leaving for France in a few days time for the unveiling of the statue of Bill Millin, the D-Day piper, on Saturday at Coleville Montgomery, next Saturday. While we’re there we will be visiting the war cemeteries along the D-Day beaches.
This was a verse which I composed after visiting them in 2011.Silent Witnesses
Stark, mute, they stand there, row on row, each one a testament to show
The folly of man’s foolish pride; the arrogantly thrown aside
Ideas of tranquil co-existence, trampled by some blind insistence
Of a lust for power and glory, peace forsaken for war’s fury.Yet also they proclaim the right to take up arms and lead the fight
To those who have such mean regard for humankind and seek reward
In violent act, barbaric deed inspired by avaricious greed,
Which humane spirit must suppress in like response by armed duress. And so these simple markers stand, quite unassuming, almost bland
In unpretentious plain design, regardless of rank, a benign
And honest statement to us all that in death, man-made titles fall
Into inconsequential form and matter not when life is shorn. But in their purpose they excel, in simple narrative they tell
Of someone who, in honour bound commitment, died, and in this ground
They lie, a noble company, distinguished in their equity
Of gallant conduct, sacrifice, who served and paid the highest price.Through countless acres occupied by these white tiers, the naked eye
Sees asymmetrical projection, ruler straight, in all directions,
    Stretching outward distantly, as if into infinity;
Expressed in stone the human toll of bygone years, which mock the soul.So let these symbols of mans past barbarity remain and last
Forever in our memory, to trust there will no longer be
A need for such displays again, to banish all the grief and pain
That these stones sadly represent, of human suffering, dark torment.

And if their future presence should result in world peace, then some good
Will have been wrought, and those who fell will have achieved in their farewell
A better victory than they thought they would secure. They, dying, sought
To end all war, so peace remained. For their sake, this should be attained.

    Bills Statue Unveiled

The long awaited day dawned clear while blue skies greeted all to cheer
And celebrate the sculptor’s skill, perpetuating Piper Bill
In bronze relief for all to see, a masterpiece of artistry,
Depicting Bill as he was then, a fine, imposing, lithe young man,
With pipes on shoulders, broad and strong, the swirling kilt, stepping along
As he did all those years ago, on Sword Beach, marching to and fro.

And so they gathered, every band, waiting for the first command
To march and play in great parade, each tune repeating those he played
On that remembered day when he writ large a page of history
By playing on despite the risk of wounds or death, but with a brisk
Uplifting clear and lively air, encouraging all who could hear
To fight, inspired, as they ran on till their objective had been won.

The pipers, in their hundreds, played, assembling at the granite base
On which the statue proudly stood, until the mayors, the great and good
Arrived to start the dedication, solemnising the occasion
With the speeches and the grace to recognise this special place,
Until the word was finally said and then the white shrouding was shed,
Revealing in heroic pose, Bill Millin, life-size, cast in bronze.

And faintly then, a growl was heard and suddenly a pale blue bird
Winged over the assembled throng – a Spitfire with distinctive song
Of Merlin engine swooped and soared in three long passes to the roar
And waves from all who gathered there to see this other legend here,
As on his final pass he came, by dipping wings, while at the same
Time leaving in a banking climb, a great and memorable time.

This monument to men’s gallantry would never, ever come to be,
Without a youthful vision seen by Serge McLewis and his team
Of selfless helpers led by John – Bill Millin’s son – and everyone
From family, friends, and others who shared this great project, saw it through:
Despite pitfalls along the way, and battling on, until this day
Dawned, finally, a great success, a fitting end to their great quest.

So, Serge and Olga, Luc and John, with Andy in there, soldiering on,
And not forgetting Gaetan too, with all the loyal families who
Resolved that Bill would march again in the same place as he did then,
We thank you in appreciation of your unstinting dedication
To provide a lasting link, not just to Bill, to make folk think
Of all those who came on that day, and those who didn’t walk away.

And surely, in his heavenly space, a smile must decorate Bill’s face,
That pipers gathered in his name and from the world’s Four Corners came
To share the spirit he engendered, in accord, no hate intended,
But rather peace and dignity with all living in harmony,
And war, a long forgotten word, if this could be, then those who shared
This place on that day long ago, would say that if it made it so,
Their sacrifice was not in vain, and made worthwhile the grief and pain.
