As many heroes, Bill didn’t consider himself like that. He said “I was very lucky”.
Indeed was he, as he was spared by the enemy snipers only because they thought he was mad.

When I told him that History would certainly pay a tribute as a such iconic symbol of D Day and that it would be better to do it while he was still here , to do the memorial as he would like it to be, he was first reluctent because of his modesty, but quickly understood that, as he said later “If they remember the bagpiper, they will not forget those who fought and fell”.

Another condition was that the statue figuring him should represent him exactly as he was june 6th 1944. He showed me and the sculptor Gaëtan ADER, the kilt he wore that day, some elements of his dress, pictures of weapons, badges, explained what was in his rucksack.

The draws, then the model of the future statue were presented to Bill who gave his agreement.

The statue will be not only a masterpiece of sculpture, but also a historical testimony on the D Day.

That’s why we propose you to take part in this tribute by your generosity.

You understand that this memorial is not a tribute only to Bill Millin, but to all those who contributed to the liberation of Europe.

Could we choose a better symbol than a man going into the battle against the Nazis with a musical instrument ?

Ce site a pour vocation de faire connaître le projet de Mémorial D Day Piper Bill Millin, et de solliciter votre soutien financier pour le réaliser.

Bill Millin, piper de Lord Lovat qui conduisit le 6 juin 1944 l’assaut des Commandos Franco-Britanniques sur le secteur Sword Beach, est devenu une figure de légende et le symbole du courage et de l’abnégation. Sous un feu nourri, voyant tomber ses camarades autour de lui, il sonna de sa cornemuse pour donner du courage, perpétuant ainsi la tradition des Highlanders.

Les snipers ennemis l’épargnèrent, le croyant fou.

Durant près de 60 ans, il revint chaque fois qu’il le put en Normandie pour rendre hommage à ses camarades.

Bill Millin a accepté ce Mémorial le figurant, non pour lui-même mais pour qu’on ne les oublie pas.

Ce Mémorial , édifié à Colleville-Montgomery, à l’endroit où les Commandos Britanniques sortirent de la plage à Sword Beach , est un hommage à tous ceux qui participèrent au D Day et aux combats qui suivirent pour libérer l’Europe du joug Nazi.

Nous sommes toujours touchés d’être rejoints dans notre action par des associations et des personnes qui sont engagées dans le Devoir de Mémoire.

C’est un Honneur et un plaisir de pouvoir associer les Médaillés de la Résistance Française à la construction de ce Mémorial. Nous nous rappelons avec respect et émotion l’engagement et les sacrifices des Résistants dont les actions héroïques ont largement facilité puis aidé à secouer l’Europe du joug Nazi.

Leur sacrifice doit être d’autant plus rappelé qu’il a eu lieu plus souvent dans l’ombre que dans la lumière, il ne doit par conséquent pas être oublié.

Merci au 51st HDM, et à toutes les bonnes volontés qui se manifestent depuis le début pour atteindre notre but commun.

A huge Thanks to The National Association of the medal-holders of the French Resistance who gives to the 51st HDM Association an amount of 1000 euros to support our project, and thanks to Julien Sabouret and François George to have been the convincing ambassadors of the cause.

We are always touched to be joined in our action by those, associations or individuals, who are engaged in the Duty of Memory.

It’s an honor and a pleasure to associate the French Resistance Medal-holders in the Memorial achievement.

We remember with respect and emotion the engagement and the sacrifices of the Resistants, whose heroic action made easier and helped to liberate Europe from the Nazism.

Their sacrifice must be more underlined that it has been granted most in the shadow than under the spots. Let remember them all.

Again, thanks to the 51st HDM, as to all the good willings who act since the begining to reach our common goal.

More than ever, United we conquer.

Our fundraising has achieved sufficient funds for the cast to go to the foundry. Our heartfelt thanks go to everyone involved in fund raising, your hard work and donations has ensured the success of the project. However, due to a busy schedule at the foundry, work cannot start until February 2012. This means that we are unable to unveil the statue this June. The unveiling ceremony will now take place in June 2013. We understand that many people will feel disappointed, but the casting takes many months and cannot be ready before July/August.

I am most grateful to everyone who have contributed to the statue fund, thanks to you we can now guarantee the casting. We have received donations from all over the world. Donations have been sent by individuals, groups and clubs, Pipe Bands, Charities and Charitable Foundations. School children have collected funds from their parents and grandparents. I have received letters with donations from the son’s and daughters of D-day Veterans thanking us for this tribute to them.

Your kindness and generosity has made the foundry stage a reality. We need to continue fundraising for the next stage, to make the unveiling an event to remember. At the statue site we intend to build a wreath laying area for future generations to visit and to remember those who gave their lives on the beaches of Normandy.

Your continued support is vital for our success. Please help to raise awareness by contacting your local newspapers, every town has a Royal British Legion and every RBL will have D-day Veterans. I hope to meet you all and thank you personally at the unveiling in June 2013.

No doubt that hundred of classes will visit the memorial in the future, and will learn that in those ancient days, there were Giants.

Nous sommes très reconnaissant au Docteur Christian Barkey, Principal de l’Ecole Internationale Britanique de Djakarta (Indonésie), pour avoir su, en quelques mots, saisir tout le sens du Mémorial Bill Millin.

Bill, figure icônique du D Day, représente tous ceux qui ont servi et qui sont tombés en Normandie. Son action, le 6 juin 1944, peut être montrée dans le monde entier comme un exemple de courage et d’abnégation. Ces valeurs peuvent être enseignées à partir de son exemple, à tous les enfants.

Nul doute que dans les générations à venir, des centaines de classes viendront visiter le mémorial, et on leur racontera que dans les temps anciens, vivaient des Géants.

En route for the funerals, the radio broadcasted Led Zeppelin tube “Stairway to Heaven”, and we suddenly realized this song mentionned a piper “leading us to reason” …….

Since, so many D Day Veterans passed. Shall we let them “going home” without the ultimate tribute due to their memory, and not take part in the dedicated Memorial ?

Il y a un an aujourd’hui Bill empruntait “l’escalier pour le Paradis”. En route pour ses funérailles, nous entendîmes à la radio le tube de Led Zeppelin “Stairway to Heaven” et réalisâmes pour la première fois que cette chanson parlait d’un piper qui nous “conduisait à la raison”.

Depuis, tant de Vétérans sont “rentrés à la maison”. Les laisserons-nous tous partir sans leur avoir rendu l’ultime hommage de notre reconnaissance par le biais du mémorial ?

Nous avons reçu très peu de donations en avril. Pas de quoi faire rougir le pictogramme de la statue. Cependant l’une d’elle est remarquable. Un jeune Piper des USA a gagné un prix lors d’une prestation et nous a envoyé la totalité de ce prix. C’est ce type de comportement que nous espérions depuis le début. Que les pipers autour de la planète, se mobilisent, en solo ou en formations de Pipe-bands, bagadous ou bandas de gaïtas pour proposer au public une aubade ou un concert, et faire parvenir au Mémorial Bill Millin le fruit de cette activité.
Si c’était le cas, en une semaine le financement serait bouclé et nous pourrions passer commande de la statue de bronze auprès du fondeur.

L’an dernier, ceux présents à Colleville-Montgomery se sont mobilisés pour Bill qui était, malgré sa grande fatigue, il nous à quitté deux mois plus tard, présent pour soutenir le projet. Nous avons recueilli 1400 euros.

Nous réitérons cette année et donnons rendez-vous au public le dimanche 5 juin à 14:30 à la Halle des Sports de Colleville-Montgomery. Bien sûr nous aimerions que ceux qui ne peuvent venir fassent parvenir un don à cette occasion.

Que l’exemple vienne de quelqu’un de si jeune, de si loin, force le respect. “Glengarry bas Yankee Piper !”

We have recieved very few donations in April. Not enough to make the statue’s picto more red.

Neitherless, one of them is remarkable. A young Piper from USA won a prize with his piping. He sent  it to us. We expect such an attitude since the begining. That pipers, as individuals, in pipe-bands, bagadous or bandas de gaïtas propose some music to the public and send the recieved money to the Memorial Bill Millin.

If it could be so, the fundraising would be closed in one week and we could order the bronze statue to the founder.

Last year we did that at a tribute concert in Colleville-montgomery. Bill Millin in spite of his illness, he passed two months later, came to support the project.

We raised 1400 euros. We’ll do it again this year. We invite those who can, to attend the concert sunday 5th at 14:30, at Colleville-Montgomery Sports Hall. We invite those who can’t attend to send a donation for that occasion.

Regarding this , from someone so young and so far, we greet him very thanksfully and say “Respect Dear Yankee Piper” !
